How to Fight FOMO When You’re Sober Curious.
Jan 06, 2022Chances are you've experienced FOMO if you're sober or sober curious.
On the blog today, we're going to discuss what FOMO is and how you can fight it head-on. Known as "the fear of missing out," this feeling can be frustrating and uncomfortable, to say the least. But it's just thoughts!
With some dedicated focus, you can re-train your brain and shut down FOMO for good. This unnecessary feeling can force you to doubt your sobriety, and we don't need that! You are strong and powerful, and blocking out FOMO will help you embrace that.
Understand What You're Feeling
Basically, FOMO feels like you can't enjoy what someone else seems to be enjoying. It's a psychological response that's natural to feel. What's important is what you do with that feeling. Do you let it consume you, or do you let your own light shine brighter?
For me, the best way to overcome this fear is through acceptance and confidence in the way I'm choosing to live. When you experience FOMO and decide not to give in, it's likely because you considered the consequences! You played the tape forward and understand that alcohol just isn't for you.
Use that same reasoning to embrace what sobriety does for your life and let that spark confidence in you!
Clean Up Your Social Media
Social platforms like Facebook, Instagram, or Snapchat are essentially breeding grounds for FOMO. People are often only posting the best moments in their lives, which can put unwarranted pressure on you as the viewer. Plus, it's hard to see your friends selectively posting the "fun" side of drinking. We all know there's a lot more going on behind the scenes.
The best way to beat FOMO on social media is to clean up your space. I suggest going through the accounts you follow. Do you need to follow old drinking buddies or toxic influencers? Probably not, my dear. What you see on your newsfeed is (for the most part) totally up to you.
Also, take a peek into your settings and see if you can mute or block anything that's super triggering for you.
Make your socials a safe space for you to roam!
Find The Right Alternatives
I think it's well established now that you can still have fun stone-cold sober. You get to define what fun means to you. That could be out with friends or cozy at home! Don't let anyone fun-shame you. Life is all about finding meaningful experiences, and booze just gets in the way of that.
One of the easiest ways to fight FOMO is by finding alternatives you genuinely love. Recently, my favorite is Curious Elixirs! Their line of alcohol-free cocktails is packed with seriously unique flavors. I can almost guarantee you've never tasted anything like it!
I keep my fridge stocked with rotating NA favorites, seltzers, and even alcohol-free wine. Even though I'm proudly sober, I still enjoy a tasty cocktail with dinner or at a party. I can blend right in with Curious Elixirs, and no one even notices my fancy drink is hangover-free!
